To those caught in its grip, addiction is pure fun. It starts out that way, that very first game you get. However, more games fly in. Eventually, a new console. Then more games. Newer consoles. Gaming communities, the fellowship of the gamers. And, without any kinds of limits being imposed, the slow but steady progression from enthusiast to addict begins. By then, only a very discerning onlooker can detect that the thin line between dream world and nightmare has been crossed.
Video game addiction can be described as unusual, yet also predictable. Why is it predictable? Because the nature of video games is what drives people to the edge–see my future blog entries for details. I should know, since I was a game addict myself. But as with any addiction, I could no more stop myself than I could deny myself my next breath. It took my mother, who was able to stop the downward spiral of addiction by pulling the plug on gaming.
There are other mothers and fathers who have taken this drastic step and ended up getting killed, whether it was over an Xbox or Halo 3, or even because Squall Leonhart told them to.
There are many aspects of addiction yet to be explored. The first chapter has not been written, much less the last. I know. I have done things and been through things not usually associated with game addiction.
Welcome to my blog, your current escape from whatever may be holding you.
